A brief writeup of the long history of Basecamp

Posted by Basecamp on May 30, 2015

37signals was founded in 1999 as a web design firm. We helped other companies design and redesign their web sites. We kept things simple, clear, and as straightforward as possible. In a world littered with confusing design, we wanted to bring clarity whenever and wherever we could.

Business was great. As we started getting busier, we needed a better way to manage our client projects. We looked around at what was on the market, tried out a few options, and felt dissatisfied with what we saw.

None of the products that existed were solving the problems we had. They had lots of chart and graphs and stats, but that's not what we needed. We needed a way to communicate with our clients and keep everything project related together in one place. We needed a central communications repository that was easy to use and reliable.

So we decided to build our own project management and collaboration tool. It didn't have a name at first because it was just an internal tool. But as we started using it with our clients, they kept asking where they could buy it. They had projects too and they couldn't find good project management and collaboration software either.

The lightbulb went off. Maybe we could wrap this up as a product and sell it to other companies, just like ours. And that's exactly what we did. We called it Basecamp and it hit the market in February of 2004.

It was an instant success. In just about a year it was generating more revenue for us than our web design consulting business! So we stopped consulting and started focusing exclusively on Basecamp. And the rest is history.

Today, Basecamp is the world's most popular cloud-based project management app. With millions of projects and millions of users sharing over 300,000,000 files, messages, and to-dos, Basecamp has become the go-to collaboration tool in dozens of industries for all sorts of businesses, organizations, and groups.

And with this all new version of Basecamp (the one you're using right now), Basecamp takes another leap ahead. The best just got better. The bar has been raised again.

Thanks for signing up for Basecamp. We sincerely hope you find it useful. We want Basecamp to be your company's go-to tool for every project.
